Molly Pinta, a 13-year-old schoolgirl, and her mom Carolyn launched the first LGBTQ Pride parade in Buffalo Grove, located within the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Ninety groups, organizations, politicians, and tens of thousands of people were meeting this Sunday, June 2, to take part in this first Pride March.

“I won’t be shocked if 10,000 people show up... especially because they know there’s a festival they can attend after the parade—so attendees get to make a whole day of it,” says Carolyn.

This Pride March took place in two parts: the March and a Festival.

After marching proudly across the streets of Buffalo Grove, everyone could attend the Uniquely Us Festival organized by the Buffalo Grove Park District, which featured two 45-minute sets by the band Catfight, a dodgeball arena, food trucks, a beer, and wine tent—and multiple community acts, including a performance by Molly and two dozen of her fellow thespians who will perform Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” as reported The Chicago Reader.

Molly had the idea to organize an LGBTQ Pride March after attending her first Pride parade in Aurora in June 2018.

Thanks to a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe and then the creation of her own non-profit organization, the Pinta Pride Project Inc., in September 2018, it could collect the money to cover the organization costs that such an event requires.

“We want people to be able to bring their kids. We want teenagers to be able to come. We don’t want anyone turned away from the parade because it’s [deemed as] inappropriate,” explains Molly.

50 years ago, a group of LGBTQ people was undergoing a police raid for the umpteenth time in the place where they like to meet, Stonewall Inn, in New York.

They then stood up against this injustice and to walk proudly in the streets of the city displaying their LGBTQ Pride in the eyes of all and thus creating the first Pride March in the world.

Fifty years later, here is a 13-year-old girl who, with her mother, has created a new LGBTQ Pride March in Buffalo Grove. Well done Molly!
